Mark “The Bird” Fidrych dies at his home in Northborough

You’ve probably already heard the news that former Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year Mark Fidrych, nicknamed “The Bird,” died in an apparent accident at his home in Northborough yesterday. Fidrych played for Algonquin before he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1974.

The Metrowest Daily News has more details, including some photos of Fidrych throwing out the first pitch during opening day of play for the Southborough Youth Baseball & Softball Association in 2003. There are also some remarks from Southborough resident and former Red Sox right-hander Luis Tiant.

“He was a good person. It’s sad to hear. Life is so strange – we have to die someday and we don’t know how or when we’ll die … It’s a big loss for baseball, he was a good pitcher.”
