This is a year when towns across Metrowest are cutting back on Fourth of July and other summer festivals due to lack of funds. But in Southborough, the support of local businesses and organizations means the sixth annual Summer Nights festival will go on as planned, fireworks and all.

“We knew that it would be difficult to ask local businesses for support in this economy, and we didn’t want to pressure the supporters that have been so good to us in the past,” Summer Nights Committee co-chair Robin Martin said. “We thought we might have to give up the fireworks display, at the least.”

But Bill Depietri of Capitol Group Properties who has co-sponsored the fireworks since the event’s inception, stepped up to sponsor them again this year, and the Friends of the Southborough Recreation signed on to cover the other half.

Walgreen’s, one of the town’s newest businesses, will fund live music at Summer Nights, and another new sponsor, Choice Car Wash of Boston Road, agreed to sponsor the dunk tank. Past sponsors who signed on again this year include Southborough House of Pizza, Tomasso Trattoria and Italian Market, The Fay School, Brendon Properties, Middlesex Savings Bank, and St. Mary’s Credit Union.

Summer Nights is scheduled for the evening of Sunday, August 30 at Neary School (rain date is Monday, August 31). The event includes inflatables, pony rides, a rock climbing wall, dunk tank and bubble romp for the kids, in addition to live music and the ever-popular fireworks display. Mark your calendars!
