My yard is in desperate need of some summertime flowers. All we have to speak of are a bunch of tiger lilies planted by the previous owner. And lovely though they may be, they’re not nearly enough.
What favorite flowers are blooming in your yard right now? Share in the comments, or better yet, send me pictures.
I want to recommend a visit to the New England Wildflower Society’s “Garden in the Woods” in Framingham. They specialize in native species that are suited to our area. As natives they don’t require as much in the way of pesticides and fungicides etc to survive! You can visit all the many habitats on their beautiful trails (like the wetland garden, the sunny meadow, the woodland slope etc) and then purchase the plants in the modest garden shop nursery.
Debbie – thanks for the tip. I’ve been meaning to go there for a while now.
A must-have for this time of summer is echinacea purpurea or purple coneflower. It comes in pink and white as well as the standard purple.
For a few more, try Obedient Flower, Black eyed Susans, Sedum will start to color now, Monarda is great for butterflies, campanula. . . . I will add more to the list as they occur to me.
Another good place to visit is Tower Hill Botanical Gardens in Boyleston. Their gardens are very inspirational.
