Fire department practices ice rescues

If you drove by the reservoir last week and noticed the Southborough Fire Department fishing someone out of the water, don’t worry, it was just a drill.

As part of their regular training regimen, firefighters practice ice rescues each December. Fire Chief John Mauro Jr. said the training is particularly important since so much of Southborough is covered in water.

But just because the firefighters know how to pull you out of the water if you fall through the ice, doesn’t mean they want to have to do it. If you want to play on the ice, best to visit a rink instead.

Chief Mauro sent along these photos of the training that took place on December 31. Click a thumbnail to enlarge and view as a slideshow.
