Longtime Southborough resident and active community member Jim Denman passed away suddenly on Monday, April 19th. He was 89.
Mr. Denman was a frequent speaker at town meeting, and he often worked the polls on election day. Among other posts he held, he served as the Southborough representative on the Assabet School Committee for a remarkable 29 years. This spring he was to be inducted into the Assabet Hall of Fame.
Mr. Denman is survived by his wife of 65 years Lois, as well as his three children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be Friday, April 23, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm at Morris Funeral Home on Main Street. Funeral service will be Saturday, April 24 at 11:30 am at St. Mark’s Church. Burial will follow in the Rural Cemetery in Southborough.
You can read more about his life in an obituary on the Morris Funeral Home website. Some nice pictures have been posted on southboroughnews.com.
I grew up knowing who Jim Denman was, but never really knew the man until my daughter graduated from Assabet in 2005. He was so darned proud that an Assabet student from Southborough was in the National Honor Society and was class valedictorian. He treated us like family, and just couldn’t stop beaming. Jim did lots in promoting Assabet, was a true blue veteran of World War II, and was a helluva nice guy. He WILL be sorely missed.
It’s truly sad for all of us that Jim is gone. He lived life to the fullest and for a long while – but not long enough. I’ll miss him.
He was a gentleman. I have very much enjoyed his participation at the Annual Town Meetings.
I’m shocked and saddened to read this. Jim was noticeably silent at this year’s Town Meeting and I was happy to chat with him on our way out of Trottier. He was so pleased with the overwhelming support the Library received. I served on the Southborough Scholarship Committee with Jim for years and I enjoyed his company and admired his sense of civic duty. He was a wonderful advocate for Assabet for many years. I will truly miss him and send his family my deepest condolences.
A sad day for Southborough!
Jim was always the voice of calm and reason on the Planning Board when I was consulting with them in the late 80’s.
If there were more civic minded people like Jim the world would be a better place.
He will be missed.
My condolences to his loving family. I will hold them in my prayers.

It is sad to note the sudden passing of Jim Denman.
He was a true gentleman and an advocate for many causes.
His presence will be greatly missed at the polls!
His place on the Assabet Board will be hard to fill with his dedication. He backed us when our S.A.G.E. daughter decided to go to Assabet rather than Algonquin. A student can still be a member of the National Honor Society, and go on to a degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. He was truly proud of every Southborough student who succeeded at Assabet.
For the best memories, speak to any of his grandchildren!
