Proposed court closure could mean higher costs for Southborough

The state is looking into consolidating several courthouses in Central Massachusetts and other parts of the state as part of a plan to close a $21M budget gap in the court system. One of those that may close is the district court in Westborough that serves area towns, including Southborough.

Should the courthouse close, it could end up costing our town money.

Northboro Police Chief Mark K. Leahy spoke for his department, as well as for the chiefs of Westboro, Southboro, Grafton and Shrewsbury — who all use Westboro District Court. Police departments would face increased court overtime costs if officers had to trek to a far-off courthouse, he said.

No word on where the court services would move to, but the best guesses say Worcester. You can read more in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
