Culinary Underground to hold grand opening celebration this weekend

“There’s no such thing as too much counter space,” Chef Lori Leinbach said as she surveyed the gleaming kitchen that will soon be the new home of her Southborough-based cooking school the Culinary Underground.

She’s right, and the new location in the Brickyard Plaza on Route 9 should offer plenty of counter space for Leinbach to expand the school she founded six years ago.

For most of those six years, Leinbach offered classes out of her home kitchen on Hillside Avenue which presented certain challenges. “My kitchen always had to be clean,” Leinbach said. “Now I don’t think I’m ever going to cook at home again. Why mess up my kitchen?”

The new space is also bigger than Leinbach’s kitchen at home. And since it’s wholly dedicated to the cooking school, the new space gives Leinbach the opportunity to bring in other instructors and offer a wider range of classes. She also plans to invite area chefs in to do demos.

The new space may be upscale, but Leinbach says the school’s focus is still firmly on home cooking. “People want to get back into the kitchen, and they need the skills to do that,” she said.

Leinbach said expanding to a new location was always part of her long-range plan. When she found the storefront in the Brickyard Plaza last spring, she knew it was the right spot.

“We wanted to stay in Southborough,” Leinbach said. “Southborough has been so unbelievable in supporting our business.”

Leinbach and her team will hold a grand opening celebration this weekend in the new space. The party is open to all. Stop by and you’ll get to meet the chef instructors and taste the kinds of food made in Culinary Underground classes. There will be door prizes, samples, and giveaways, along with a free hands-on activity for families on Sunday.

The event runs Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. If you want to catch a demonstration, here’s the schedule:

Saturday

  • 11:00 am – Knife Skills
  • 1:00 pm – Salmon Brandade
  • 3:00 pm – Cajun Sustainable Seafood Chowder

Sunday

  • 1:00 – 4:00 pm – Food Pyramid Salads and Cake Pops (both are hands-on family activities)

Culinary Underground is located at 21 Turnpike Road (map). You can find more information on their website (culinaryunderground.com).

I have taken 2 classes with Lori–both were fantastic! I am so happy about her expansion and can’t wait to see the new place. If you have ever thought about taking a cooking class, I recommend you try one of Lori’s classes. As just one example, she totally changed how I cook chicken–and my family loves it.
