For some of you, cell phone service is about to get faster. Verizon announced last week that it will expand its 4G network to Southborough and surrounding towns starting August 18.
Verizon 4G service is already available in the Greater Boston and Springfield areas. The upgrade later this month covers 20 cities and towns in Worcester county including Northborough, Westborough, Shrewsbury, and Southborough among others. An additional 26 communities in Middlesex, Norfolk, and Plymouth counties will also get upgraded.
In a press release Verizon said its wireless customers with with 4G LTE smartphones, laptop modems and mobile hotspots will be able to take advantage of speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. You can read the full press release here.
Verizon’s LTE really is quite a bit faster – this will be a welcome change. I’ve seen it active in town on and off over the past few weeks.
Will this support simultaneous voice and data on the Verizon version of the Apple iPhone the way AT&T has since the beginning? On Verizon, you’d need two phones to do tha same thing.
