Stanley Cup visits Southborough (UPDATED with photo)

Above: The Stanley cup at the Southborough Fire Station (photo via Facebook)

The Stanley Cup has been making appearances throughout Massachusetts since the Bruins won it in June, and yesterday it was Southborough’s turn. The cup made its way to the Southborough Fire Station where firefighters and police officers along with their families got an up-close look.

Linda over at SouthboroughNews.com was there and took a bunch of photos. Check them out here (you may have to scroll down the page to see the photos).

Update 3:20 pm: The Southborough Police Department posted the above photo on their Facebook page.

It’s too bad they kept it to themselves. I would have gladly paid to see it with my kids. They could have used the money for the Southborough Firefighters Assn.

Well, yes and no, Susan. I suppose the Emergency Responders group could’ve suggested it would be best to share the cup with the community at large. I agree with Linda, above.

And even though my family didn’t take advantage of it, it was a terrific thing that the World Series trophy made a public visit to our town.

Maybe the person affiliated with the Bruins could arrange another visit by the Cup–and coupling it with a fundraiser seems like a win-win.

Would love to see that fundraising money split with the Firefighters Assoc and the Police Assoc. Maybe that could help pay for the junior police academy for the town’s youth. It is such a great program. Perhaps we could get that back here and do something like that, I am sure MANY people in town and surrounding towns would pay to see and be photographed with the cup. Great idea of a fundraiser, Linda.

I know many people must be disapointed about not being able to see the cup, however I have learned that the Police & Fire Departments were strictly instructed by the Bruins brass to keep the visit quite and only tell staff and family. Staff could not even tell their friends or fellow town employees. I’m sure they would have welcomed the public if it was up to them.

…and again, no worries here since I don’t think we would’ve taken advantage of the opportunity, BUT the emergency responders could have said, “Thanks but no thanks” to a secret private viewing. Can you imagine how cool that would have been?

It would be even cooler if residents of Southborough could be happy that the Police and Fire Department had this special opportunity instead of begrudging them such a small thrill. They do a lot for us and I, for one, am happy they were offered a unique experience that probably made them feel very special for a short time.

I heard it was in town, but didn’t know the specifics… ah, too bad it got sent back up to Canada. Glad they got to host it for a while, I don’t begrudge the fact that it had to be kept secret…
