Southborough business owner at the center of Northborough farm controversy

There is a saga that has been playing out in neighboring Northborough that I thought some of you might be interested in, particularly since it has a Southborough connection.

For the past several months the Northborough Zoning Board of Appeals has been hearing complaints from neighbors of the SA Farm on Whitney Street who say it’s being improperly used as a landfill. The farm is owned and operated by Santo Anza who also owns Southborough-based Apple D’Or Tree Inc.

There’s been plenty of drama surrounding the controversy, from heated exchanges at ZBA meetings, to reports of items being stolen from SA Farm, to charges that Anza assaulted and threatened a neighbor, charges that were later dropped.

Earlier this month the sate attorney general’s office stepped in and asked for a temporary injunction against Anza, saying illegal dumping was taking place at the Northborough property. They said a 100,000-cubic-yard waste pile at the site contained spoiled food, trash, manure and cardboard. They also said Anza buried dead animal carcasses in the waste pile.

A judge issued the injunction and ordered Anza to stop accepting solid waste.

It’s not the only property owned by Anza that has come under scrutiny lately. The Mass DEP has also threatened legal action over violations at a 4-acre Boston composting site leased by Anza through Apple D’Or Tree.

Follow the many links above for all the sordid details.

I know Santo. I am appalled that the neighborhood around this farm has been able to take these made up grievances all the way to the attorney generals office. I remember reading about the Salem witch hunts. I know history repeats itself, but I can hardly believe this! The accusations are not truthful. I think the justice system in MA is unprofessional to even listen to this trash.
