It’s not a trick, and for many it won’t be a treat either. The dusting of snow we saw in Southborough last night may be just a preview of an even bigger storm to come.
In a statement issued yesterday, the National Weather Service said there is “increasing confidence” that we could see a significant winter storm on Saturday night with the potential to bring six inches or more to much of interior Massachusetts.
A storm dropping six inches wouldn’t normally be a big deal, but the fact that it’s still October makes things more complicated.
“Our major concern is power outages,” Southborough Emergency Management Director of Operations Neal Aspesi wrote in an email to emergency responders. “With so many leaves still on the trees, there will be an increased chance that the (heavy, wet) snow will accumulate resulting in downed limbs/trees.”
The forecast is still evolving, but the storm is expected to start as rain on Saturday morning, with a change to snow from west to east starting in the late morning and running through mid afternoon. Snow is expected to reach the outskirts of Boston by 4:00 or 5:00 pm.
Guess it’s time to put down the rake and pick up the snow shovel.
