School Street was closed after a truck hit a telephone pole early this morning, snapping the pole in two.
Lieutenant Sean James said a box truck had just entered School Street from the downtown end when it swerved to avoid a deer. The truck struck a telephone pole on the west side of the street and snapped it in half. The accident ocurred shortly after 5:00 am. The driver was not injured.
National Grid and Verizon were called to the scene to repair the pole. As of 1:00 pm today the road was still closed while crews repaired the damage. National Grid reported less than five customers in the area are without power as a result. No word on when the road will reopen.
This morning’s accident is the latest in a string of car vs. deer encounters reported in town since late last month.
