Algonquin championship road signs to be auctioned off on Friday

This week you have a chance to own a piece of Algonquin sports history. During the boys varsity basketball game on Friday night, the Algonquin Athletic Boosters will host a silent auction for five championship road signs.

The signs used to line the roadways of Northborough and Southborough, but Algonquin Principal Tom Mead said they were recently removed because they were worn and because (apparently) it was never legal to put them up in the first place. Mead said instead of the signs, new banners celebrating the championships will be installed along the school driveway.

There are six copies of each of the five championship signs (2004 & 2005 Boys Soccer teams, 2006 Boys Baseball team, 2009 Girls Soccer team and the 2009 Girls Tennis team). Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Algonquin Athletic Boosters.

The basketball game starts at 7:00 pm at Algonquin. Bidding will close at the conclusion of the game.

What do you think about the decision to remove the signs? Are you glad they’re gone, or did you like having them up? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Boo to not being legal to put up championship signs. Is that really the case?

Who said it was illegal? We want names ;)

If so, let’s get our selectmen to change the town bylaw to make it legal. If it requires a warrant article, that can be done very easily.

I'm just sayin'....

I agree! A lof of other towns put these signs up…I think the Boosters should hold off and do a bit more research on the legality before taking them down….

I’ve seen the signs along the school driveway and I think they look great. They celebrate more teams.
