The annual Southborough Education Foundation Spelling Bee is always a good time for a good cause, and this year was no exception. Check out this recap sent in by SEF.
The Trottier Middle School was abuzz last month when the Southborough Education Foundation (SEF) held their 5th Annual Spelling Bee on March 9th. As SEF’s largest fundraising event, the Spelling Bee raised over $28,000 to help fund innovative educational programs for the Southborough public schools. Southborough based ikaSystems, Inc., which provides cloud computing solutions for healthcare payers, was the core sponsor of the Bee and many local businesses, individuals and Fay and St. Mark’s schools either donated raffle prizes or sponsored teams to make the night a huge success.
Bruce Werner was once again the night’s Master of Ceremonies and the panel of judges, with dictionary in hand, consisted of: Dr. Charles Gobron, Superintendent of Schools; Donna McDaniel, columnist for the Northborough-Southborough Villager; and Linda Murdock, three-time Spelling Bee Champion and Principal of Neary Elementary School. John H. Maley III of Maley Studio generously provided photography for the event.
This year, 24 teams of students, teachers, administrators, parents and town librarians tested their orthographic knowledge and competed for top spelling honors. The Word Nerds team, with Michelle Brownlee, Ed Kerrigan and Christine Smith, took home the spelling title by correctly spelling “desiccate” in the final round. The other three teams reaching the championship round were: Bee Mine (Rachel Bartolomei, Nicole Ferrera and Coleen Sampson), BayBees (Diane Georger, Jennie Bogaert and Katie Nordman), and Sp-elegance (Peg Daly, Lori Winer and Jean Terry).
