Sportsmanship award in honor of Eric Green to be presented after youth baseball game tonight

Two teams from Southborough Youth Baseball’s 10-12 year old division will play the second game of their double elimination championship tournament tonight at Mooney Field. It’s do-or-die for team Eagle Leasing as they take the field against team Dominos. The game starts at 6:00 pm.

After the game, the league will award its first Eric Green Sportsmanship Award to a player who exhibits “outstanding attitude, sportsmanship, and team spirit.” Green, a 7th-grader at Trottier, passed away in January after suffering a seizure.

SYB sent along this information about the award:

On Opening Day SYB announced that the league has established an award in memory of Eric Green to be presented to a 12-year-old player each season. This award will be based on qualities exhibited by Eric during his baseball career and throughout his life. This is not to be equated to baseball skills but rather good sportsmanship, perseverance and one’s overall commitment to their team and friends.

The recipients name has been inscribed on a memorial plaque to be hung at The Trottier School and updated annually. The recipient will also receive a commemorative award.

The nominees this year are Andrew Hartnett, Isaiah Keegan, James Walsh, Zach Zides, and Nick Vanni.

Congratulations to all the nominees, they should all be proud to be considered for this award. The thoughtful comments presented on each nominee’s behalf made choosing a recipient a difficult task.

If you’re going to the game tonight, bring along new or used baseball equipment to donate to the leagues Kids Gear for Baseball drive. There will be a collection basket at the Snack Shack.
