Southborough police interrupt copper theft in progress, arrest one at gunpoint

Southborough police arrested a masked suspect in the overnight hours on Monday after he was caught stealing copper wire from the NStar property on Cordaville Road (adjacent to the Transfer Station). A second suspect fled the scene and got away despite a manhunt that included a state K-9 unit.

Here are more details from the Southborough Police Department Facebook page.

On September 3, 2012, at approximately 0312 hrs, officers from the Southborough Police Department responded to Nstar on Cordaville Road, for a possible Copper theft in progress. Upon the officer’s arrival, they observed a male party dressed in black (with a mask covering his head and face), carrying a large coil of copper wire. The suspect was taken into custody at gunpoint, and a second suspect fled the area on foot. Hopkinton Police, Ashland Police, Westborough Police, and State Police K9 assisted Southborough in attempting to locate the second suspect; but he was able to elude the officers.

ARRESTED: Nicholas A. Mercaldi of Chestnut Street, Lynn, MA. Mr. Mercaldi was charged with B&E in the Nighttime w/ Intent to Commit a Felony; Attempt to Commit a Crime; Defacement of Personal Property; and two counts of Trespassing. There is an on-going investigation to establish the identity of the second suspect.

True to my word I will take this moment to applaud the SPD.

Great job SPD, keep up the great work. Thanks again for the protection SPD.

One down and big message sent to the bad guys. Things change when you know you might be looking at the wrong end of a gun someday.
