A year and a half ago, residents were shocked by news that a registered Level 2 sex offender was living near Southborough Village Preschool on East Main Street.
The oversight by Southborough Police in allowing an offender to reside in an area off limits under town bylaws was a subject of controversy. The story broke when Daniel J. Goichman was arrested on child pornography charges. Southborough Wicked Local reports that Goichman was convicted yesterday.
According to SWL, the judge sentenced Goichman to 6 1/2 – 7 1/2 years in prison, followed by 10 years probation. The conviction was for possession and dissemination of child pornography, including images of girls as young as 4 or 5, and young children engaged sexually with adult men.
SWL reports:
“This is a crime worthy of 10 years,” Assistant Attorney General Timothy Wyse said before the sentencing, calling Goichman an “unreformed sexual predator” who “has not learned his lesson.” . .
Tuesday, Wyse said Goichman – who pleaded guilty to statutory rape of an underage girl in 2002 in New Hampshire – never reformed himself after serving a year in prison for that crime.
“He has continued to search the Internet for images of children being sexually abused,” Wyse said, and has continued to perpetuate the market for such material. . .
“We have no reason to believe (he) would stop,” Wyse said, adding Goichman “still blames the victim” of his prior rape case for what happened.
Wyse asked for at least a 10-year sentence; defense attorney David Goodhue asked for 3 1/2 years.
Goodhue disputed Wyse’s characterization of his client, saying a psychologist gave an 89 percent chance Goichman would not re-offend within five years.
Terms of probation include GPS monitoring, no Internet access and no unsupervised contact with children under age 16.
