Here are highlights of what’s happening around town this week.
Tuesday, September 16, 2014:
- ARHS Open House (Follows student schedule ) @ Algonquin Regional High School: Open House for parents/guardians of ARHS students.
- Walking Trails of Southborough for seniors (9:30 am) @ Chestnut Hill Farm trail: Explore scenic woodlands and rolling fields on this working farm. Wear comfortable sneakers, shoes, long pants, hat, repellent, camera, and a snack. Water will be provided. Takes place rain (within reason) or shine. Register by calling 508-229-4453.
Wednesday, September 17, 2014:
- Worcester Art Museum Bus Trip for seniors (12:15 – 3:30 pm) @ From and back to the Southborough Senior Center: The museum collection includes 35,000 paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, photos, prints, drawings, and new media. It also houses the Knights exhibit featuring armor and artifacts from the former Higgins Armory. Suggested donation- $5 for Friends of Council of the Aging and $10 for non-members. Pre-register by calling 508-229-4453.
- The Friends of the Southborough Library (7:30 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Public Library: Anyone who wishes to help support the library is welcome to join the monthly meeting
Thursday, September 18, 2014:
- Tai Chai demonstration class for seniors (11:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: A free class, for those who are unfamiliar with the practice. Tai Chai is “an internal Chinese martial art that focuses on mental and spiritual aspects of movements.
- Finn and Woodward Early Release (12:00 pm)
- Legos at the Library (3:45 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Public Library: Children are welcome to come build with Legos, and display their creations in the Children’s Room. Legos will be provided, but all materials need to remain at the library. Parents or caregivers must stay with children during this event.
- Finn Curriculum Night (6:00 – 7:30 pm) @ Mary Finn School: Open House for parents/guardians of Finn students.
- Geneology Club (7:00 – 8:45 pm) @ Southborough Public Library: This is an informal group meeting where you can learn and share tips about resources for researching family history. This event is free and open to the public. Bring your laptop.
Friday, September 19, 2014:
- Applefest: Northborough’s three day festival. (It looks like a combination of Southborough’s Summer Nights and Heritage Day, but with even more.) There are 20 overlapping community festivities over 3 days. See dedicated post.
- Representative Dykema’s Southborough office hours (8:00 am – 9:00 am) @ Mauro’s Cafe, 2 Main St: Representative Dykema’s quarterly office hours in town. Residents are encouraged to stop in to the office hours to share concerns, questions and opinions on state issues or simply to chat over a cup of coffee.
- Free Matinee – Nebraska (12:00 – 2:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Starring Bruce Dern, Will Forte, and June Quinn. An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize. (Rated R for language. ) Room will be open at 11:30 for anyone who wants to bring their lunch
Saturday, September 20, 2014:
- Applefest: Northborough’s three day festival. (It looks like a combination of Southborough’s Summer Nights and Heritage Day, but with even more.) There are 20 overlapping community festivities over 3 days. See dedicated post.
- Applefest Concert, BBQ and Fireworks (5:00 – 9:00 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School athletic field: This particular Applefest event sounds a lot like Northborough’s version of Southborough Summer Nights – it includes a BBQ, moonwalks, ARHS’ robotics, cotton candy, pony rides, and games.
- Harmony Brigade A Capella Showcase (6:00 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School: the third annual A Capella Showcase featuring Algonquin students and the 100 man Harmony Brigade chorus. Also featuring groups The Groove Barbers and Boston Accent. Tickets are $15/adult and $10/student under 18. For more info and to order tickets, visit www.nehb.net/arhs.
