The Southborough Green Technology and Recycling Committee is continuing its efforts to educate the public on the impact we have on our environment.
Chair Carl Guyer will host another “400 and Rising” climate change presentation this month. The discussion will take place Thursday, January 29 at 7:00 pm at the Southborough Library.
He has also shared his video of the slide show (above).
The committee’s intention is to help with “Understanding the Magnitude and Impact of CO2 Emissions“.
Guyer examines:
- The impact carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are having on the earth’s atmosphere and the existence of life on the planet.
- How presently one third of the most important life enabling chemical element, carbon, is now sourced from fossil fuels.
- Data demonstrating the recent unprecedented rise in the concentration of atmospheric CO2, the source, and why so many are concerned.
- How to take action right here in our own town.
Guyer also shared another interesting video below, this one by by climate central.
It’s a 1 minute visual demonstration of changing temperature records.
Produced in November, it refers to likelihood of 2014 breaking a new record for hottest year. That outcome was reported as confirmed this week. (See Scientific America’s article):

I believe global warming is real but it is a very very difficult problem to solve.
1. Our first world lifestyle is built on a foundation of massive quantities of inexpensive energy. We, as a society will kill to maintain that life style
2. There are roughly 3 billion people on the planet that can see the first rung of a first world lifestyle within their grasp. That means air conditioning, central heat, stove, washing machine, and above all a car. They will not be denied and their governments know better than to try.
If you want to act there are several things that you could consider beyond your own behavior
1. Recognize that the Town of Southborough is probably the biggest emitter of greenhouse gasses in Southborough. All those inefficient dilapidated building take a lot of heating, those big cruisers use 25,000 gal of gasoline a year…..
2. You should be an advocate of Nuclear Power and Hydraulic Fracturing (aka fraking). Nuclear Power generates no greenhouse gasses and can provide utility scale power that we all love. Hydraulic Fracturing has driven the price of natural gas to historic lows which has permitted the conversion of coal fire plants to NG. NG CO2 emissions are about 1/2 of the emissions from coal

Here comes lovable (I mean that sincerely) Carl Guyer with his statistics again.
Those graphs shown above in the first video above employ the technique explained in Huff and Geis: “How to Lie with Statistics”, Chapter 5, “The Gee Whiz Graph”.
Let’s be clear, the change shown from 320 to 400 PPM (parts per million) CO2 is the following:
Atmospheric CO2 has gone from thirty-two one-thousandths of one percent to forty one-thousandths of one percent.
I dunno, given that CO2 is essential for sustaining all life on earth, and that it comprises only a few thousandths of a percent of the atmosphere (compared to oxygen’s 21%), shouldn’t we be just as concerned with too little CO2?
The science is more complicated, of course, but that is just the flip-side of argumentation employed by the global warming alarmists. So don’t fall for it.
Is there a way to contact this committee for a potential presentation to another town organization?
If you email me at mysouthborough@gmail.com, I’ll be happy to pass the message along.
