Algonquin had an outstanding season in spring sports. Girls Rugby scored a state championship in May. The rest of the school’s nine varsity teams headed into post season tournaments.
But now the school’s full throttle championship bids is down to only one more possible title.
Third seed Boys Lacrosse took on upper seed Westfield on their competitor’s turf. They won the Semi-Final match 11-7.
The team’s blog, Thawklax.com, posted:
Junior Mike Martens (5 goals, 3 assists) and senior Alex Sabel (4 goals) powered the visiting No. 3 Tomahawks (16-5) past the No. 2 Bombers (17-3) in a Central/West Division 2 semifinal in Westfield. Senior Paul Luongo (assist) and sophomore Zach Skowronek (2 assists) each recorded a goal for Algonquin, and junior Colton King made 13 saves.
To get to states, the Boys have to overtake top-seed Longmeadow. It’s a team that already bested them early in the season.
Those Finals are scheduled for June 12th, 7:00 pm at at West Springfield High. If they triumph, they’ll head to Burlington on Monday for the state Semi-Finals.
Four other ARHS teams competed in Quarter/Semi-Finals this week:
- Girls Lacrosse fell in their Semi-Finals to upper seed Minnechaug 11-8.
- Softball was shutout in their Semi-Finals by lower seed Tantasqua, 2-0.
- Baseball didn’t make it that far. The 2nd seed team lost their Quarter Finals 7-1 to seventh seed Westborough.
