It’s time for another open thread. What’s on your mind this week, Southborough?
For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
- Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
- Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
- Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
- Point out interesting or helpful resources
You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

Hi Beth,
This weekend there are surveyors out working on Route 85. Any chance you could find out from the DPW what is going on? TIA
Curious
They’ve actually been surveying the Cordaville area for a few weeks. I too am curious.
Since Route 85 is a long stretch, I didn’t want to make assumptions yesterday before checking in with DPW. But, if the area surveyed is Cordaville Road, it’s likely related to an upcoming project planned.
In early June, I shared a quick preview that DPW Chief Karen Galligan gave the Board of Selectmen. The department is planning a future Cordaville Road construction project from River Street to the DPW. Before going to Town Meeting for funding, she will be communicating with the public for feedback. (At this point, I don’t have a projected timeline.)
Precious few details given at the BOS meeting where Ms. Galligan informed the board of the project. Any notion of when residents will be given more information?
I actually emailed Ms. Galligan about some questions including that one this morning. Unfortunately, this is her vacation week. So, I don’t expect to get any response until sometime next week.
Great. Thank you beth.
Under a new open thread, this came up as a question again. I realized that I never wrote a final comment, confirming my assumption. (I was on vacation, so forgot. Karen Galligan was also on vacation at the time, but she responded with answer.)
The DPW Chief confirmed that the surveying is part of the engineering that was approved by Selectmen in June for future Cordaville Road construction project from River Street to the DPW.
Galligan said her that before her department goes to Town Meeting for funding, she will be communicating with the public for feedback. This summer, she clarified that she is waiting on the engineering design plans. When those are completed, she will begin public outreach. She doesn’t expect that to happen until at least September.
Anyone know any local teens who would like some $$$ work weeding, light yard work? I have about 10 hours of help needed here in Southboro. Could be spread over 2 or 3 days.
Oh my, me too, for sure. I am always wondering if there are some industrious teens or perhaps someone else who needs a day or two of work. But how would we contact them and v.v.? If someone knows a contact or way to connect, maybe a church or youth group, please let us know. Again , this is a day or two of work for $$$, not volunteering.
You can try contactiong Southborough Recreation. They promote a Teen Job Book: “TEEN JOB BOOK – There are a lot of people in Southborough who need help with babysitting, computers, yard work and a variety of other odd jobs. If you are 13 years or older and like to work, this is a great opportunity to make some extra spending money. Just stop by the Southborough Recreation Office in the Art Center Building and complete a Teen Job form for a job that you are interested in performing. We will keep your completed form in the Teen Job Book Binder for those adults seeking help to look through.”
I have also seen a binder kept in the library by the downstairs bulletin board outside the Children’s Room for flyers for babysitting, etc.
Thanks!
In case you missed it – I just created a page for teens to post info and those hiring to do the same: https://mysouthborough.com/2015/07/14/odd-jobs-postings-for-teens-and-those-who-want-to-hire-them/

Beth,
When you reach DPW, maybe you can also ask when they plan on fixing the road as you turn onto Parkerville from Route 9 eastbound!
There’s a dangerous pothole right there that is coupled with an exposed corner of a storm drain. Making the turn either jeopardizes tires or forces the driver to swing very far into the oncoming lane of the Parkerville traffic that is trying to enter Route 9.
I see time and time again when people ask questions on this and other blogs about town matters.
Here is a novel idea southsider and others…pick up your phone and CALL YOURSELF!! I have done that many times, and always get an answer!
Or of you are too afraid to talk to an actual person (how many times do we call a company only to get an automated system and try our damnedest to talk to an actual person?), email them. The contact information (phone and email) for all town departments is listed on the town’s web site, or if it easier, I bet Beth can post the list on this site for you and everyone that wants Beth to do your dirty work! When did it become Beth’s responsibility to be the go between between residents and the DPW Superintendent or the Police Chief or the Town Plannner (the list can go on an on).
The dept listings are listed under town/directory resources. I don’t mind asking questions of departments, but readers may often find it’s more expedient to do it themselves.
Has anyone seen our family of swans lately? I saw one adult about 3-4 weeks ago but no sighting since then. Hope they are OK!
Phonebooks.
I am wondering what the feeling is in town for the continued delivery of phone books door to door. I have been opting out of receiving them in every way available and yet they still continue to arrive on my step, in the yard, at the mailbox. Over the years I have only caught one driver in the act and confirmed that he did possess a list that showed my address should not get one but he also confirmed he never looks at it, easy just to toss them everywhere.
I think if the process of address removal worked then maybe I wouldn’t care. Anyone feel strongly one way or another?
I agree. I’d even go further in saying I wish phonebooks were only made available to people who actively requested them. Perhaps a returnable postcard mailer.
