Talk celebrating women’s history – March 16

Above: One subject McDaniel plans to touch on in her public talk is suffragettes who overcame strong opposition to women’s rights.

Donna McDaniel is inviting the community to embrace “Women’s History Month”.

The Southborough writer will give a talk at the Library on Wednesday March 16 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. The presentation will be accompanied by a slideshow of historical photos.

Unlike past projects, McDaniel will pull from history beyond Southborough borders to talk about the important accomplishments of women.

The free talk is open to the public, no registration required.:

March 16 at the Southborough Library: Celebrate Women’s History Month!

YES… there is actually a Women’s History Month! In fact there has been one after a 1911 UN declaration! Here’s a chance to make up for lost time—March 16 at 7 p.m., a program organized by historian Donna McDaniel will feature the stories of women and photos—who contributed greatly to our lives and our country’s life.

Until now, likely most of us have learned only a few names of women who deserve a place in our consciousness—and our history books! Here’s a way to start building your list of important women—past and present! Do you recognize these women? Know what they might be remembered for? [Not in any order]: Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, Eleanor Roosevelt, Sandra Day O’Connor, Abby Kelly Foster, Sarah Grimke, Rosa Parks, Maria Chapman, Sarah Remond, Maria Weston Chapman, Joan Baez, Madame CJ Walker, Madame Curie, Emily Green Balch, Prudence Crandall, Lucretia Mott, Amy Post and MORE!.

Though Women’s Day wasn’t celebrated until 1979, thanks to the work of a school district in California and the well-known women’s historian Gilda Lehrer. In 1978, the school district of Sonoma, California, participated in Women’s History Week, an event designed around the week of March 8 (International Women’s Day). A year later Lehrer chaired a women’s history conference at Sarah Lawrence College.

Donna has two YouTube programs thanks to SAM: “Cows to Computers” about the changes in Southborough in the 1970s, and “Southborough Town Meeting with Donna McDaniel”. She also created the Southborough Memories book of interviews with long-time residents and has been a Villlager columnist for over 30 years.
