Every year on or about Flag Day, Veterans of Southborough’s VFW and American Legion posts hold a flag retirement ceremony. During the ceremony, worn flags collected from residents, as well as ones from the cemetery that were replaced this past Memorial Day, will be retired by ritual burning.

The ceremony this year will be held tonight at the DPW. American Legion Commander Steve Whynot announced:

VFW Post 3276 and American Legion Post 161 will be holding a Flag Retirement Ceremony tomorrow – Flag Day – June 14th at the DPW Headquarters – Cordaville Rd.

The ceremony to honorably and with dignity destroy by fire – nearly 1500 flags will begin at 6:00 PM in a safe area that has been designated.

These flags have been collected from the Cemetery this past Memorial Day and over the past year from the collection box at the Transfer Station.

Residents are welcomed to come by and drop off any torn, worn, faded or unserviceable flags they may have.
