Water news: Rate increase begins Sept, vote on voluntary ban, and quality report

A memo from Public Works to the Board of Selectmen reminds residents that new water bill rates go into effect this September. Base rates will remain the same but tier rates will rise 3.25%.

The reminder came with other water related news.

First was a request for selectmen to approve a voluntary water restriction. As in past years, it would simply ask residents to alternate “watering” days based on their street number. (Odd numbered houses on odd days, even numbered on even days.)

Southborough began implementing water bans in the summer of 2008 and reported a big drop in water use over the previous summer. The board has approved it every year since with the apparent exception of last summer.

(No public request was made by Public Works last summer, presumably due to the record snowfalls that previous winter.)

In other news, the MWRA released its water quality report for the Town and residents.

As usual, the water supplier’s report gives Southborough tap water high marks with seemingly insignificant contamination levels. The report seeks to reassure residents by explaining why Southborough isn’t Flint and we can trust our supply.
