[Editor’s Note: For readers who aren’t aware, Elaine Beal (and her late husband Philip) made an important, amazingly generous contribution to the preservation of Southborough’s open space.

As explained in Philip’s obituary:

In the 1950s and 60s, he and his wife purchased 190 acres abutting their farm to keep developers at bay. All the land now is protected by permanent conservation restrictions, a lasting tribute to Beals conservation ethic and love for his town.

56 acres of that land is the Beals Preserve gifted to the Southborough Open Land Foundation.]

Thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Beals for their very generous donation of land. I occasionally have the opportunity to walk on these trails and always enjoy it.
