Algonquin’s running teams are collecting shoes through Thanksgiving, with dropoffs at Algonquin the next two Saturdays. No, they won’t be wearing them. The shoes will be sold as part of a win-win-win fundraiser.
The last time I ran this post, I may have been a bit too “clever” (or not). When I wrote “ARHS Cross Country Shoe Drive”, I hope you didn’t assume it was a drive for “running shoes”.
Those are certainly welcome. But so are your cleats, tennies, flats and other kicks.
ARHS Cross Country hopes to raise funds for the Boys and Girls teams, while reducing pollution and helping impoverished people in developing nations:
The public is invited to participate in a shoe drive to raise funds for the Algonquin Regional High School Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams. Donations of gently worn, used and new shoes* will be accepted. The amount of money raised is determined by the total weight of the shoes collected.
All donated shoes will be redistributed to microenterprise partners through Funds2Orgs and used in developing nations for impoverished people to start their own businesses.
*All types of shoes can be donated, including sport cleats. Shoes should be in wearable condition (complete sole, no holes) and must be in pairs (no single shoes). . .
In the US alone, over 600 million pairs of shoes are thrown away per year. The materials used to manufacture a pair of shoes are created from chemical compounds that will create health hazards if left to disintegrate openly or in landfills. By donating your gently worn, used and new shoes to the Algonquin Regional High School Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams, your shoes are given a second chance to make a difference.
Two more collection dates are coming up a the back of Algonquin’s rear parking lot:
- Saturday, November 5, 10:00 am to noon
- Saturday, November 19, 10:00 am to noon
Or, dropoff your donations any time now through Thanksgiving in a plastic bag at 16 Little Pond Rd, Northborough, MA.
The ARHS Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams are members of the Algonquin Regional High School Athletic Boosters Club, a Federal and Commonwealth recognized 501(c)(3) charity.
