In February, I shared news that Southborough Police were pursuing charges against the owner of China Gourmet (formerly Samba West). According to Southborough Wicked Local the case is now gong to court.
The restaurant owner, Shi Yun Zhang of Framingham is accused of destroying evidence in the case against a an alleged drunk driver. It’s a case of great interest to the SPD, since the driver crashed into a cruiser, injuring a Southborough police officer.
It was the second time in less than a year, that a driver allegedly left the restaurant highly intoxicated then went on to crash into an SPD officer.
In the first case, the restaurant appeared to cooperate with police, even alerting them in advance of an intoxicated driver on the road.
But when police investigated the second incident, the owner purportedly refused to voluntarily provide surveillance footage. When an officer returned with a warrant, the owner claimed the video was destroyed in an electrical fire.
According to SWL’s report, a Grand Jury has indicted Zhang with “tampering with an object for use in an official proceeding”.
The restaurant was already given a 17 day liquor suspension by Framingham selectmen. The board issued a 15 day suspension for the second incident in addition to activating the two day suspension that was held in abeyance for the first incident.
On Friday, Zhang will be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court.
