Open discussion thread: Ask questions, share opinions

It’s time for another open thread. What’s on your mind this week, Southborough?

For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
  • Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
  • Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
  • Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
  • Point out interesting or helpful resources

You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

Updated (6/1/17 3:28 pm): Another reader contributed a better look at the swans from this morning that I couldn’t resist sharing. Enjoy Claire Reynold’s video below from the reservoir off of Parkerville Road:

I’m interested in feedback from the community regarding how we can prevent the dangerous Park Central development.

Thanks for posting the video. I’ve been keeping track of the family, and saw them last Saturday the 27th also near Parkerville Rd. But I also saw an otter swimming not far away…this might account for the reduced # of babies. I hope at least one survives these early days.

Buy the land and donate it to the town!!

Over the years, projects have been proposed for this site, and people have fought them all the way. The owner of the land purchased it with the intent of future development, just like the land that your house currently sits on.

If my memory serves correctly, there was a proposal or two many years ago for office space on the site. Think about it for a minute – an office park with direct access to Route 9 (which would have been granted at that time), mostly operating during the day, with no impact on the schools, and little impact on public safety…I bet that alternative looks really good right about now!

So, what is the alternative? Get a group of your friends together, raise the funds, purchase the property, and donate the land as open space! Case closed!

I am curious now that you have mentioned it. Did the “direct access to Route 9” change occur before or after the current owner purchased this land?

I love the swans! It’s such a joy to see them while driving by the reservoirs.

A stretch of sidewalk on Woodland Road has become mostly obstructed by plant overgrowth. I’m tempted to take my own shears to the problem to avoid running in the street here, but don’t want to overstep any rules about doing so. Who is responsible, the town or property owners?

Clip away and if anyone bothers you seek a retroactive waiver from the authorities.

Nice of you to do this Betsy. You are responsible for upkeep on the street adjacent to your property line. But you can request help from the town, via email to DPW head Karen is good. They have a brush cutter but can only swipe thru once a year or so. And it is indiscriminate, ergo effective but ugly. If this is a running path, perhaps you can get help quickly. They also act quickly for traffic or obstruction or safety issues.

There are some restrictions, such as not cutting a tree with circumference over 2 inches. But be careful of poison ivy. also, for other residents, be aware the rules are different if it is a “county” road, like 30 vs a local road.

Is there an opportunity anywhere for parents to provide feedback on their child’s experience at the end of the school year? This is our 8th year in the Southborough schools and I don’t recall ever being offered the option to provide feedback to the teacher, school, or district. Some sort of annual automated survey would seem to be a huge benefit to the schools, helping them gain perspective on what’s working and where improvement is needed.

Urgent! I have 30 summer camp students ages 11 and 12 with their teachers coming July 8th and 9th and staying in Southborough on Main street until July 21st (2 weeks). I’mI seeking host families with spare furnished rooms who can provide a safe friendly American immersion experience in shared rooms (twin beds) while they attend day camp all day with their teachers and go on excursions themselves. Your job would be to supervise during their stay in the home, have fun with breakfast and dinner. They are sweet awesome kids, well behaved but they are kids:) Please contact me right away as you can see the timing is right around the corner and it’s an application process. Host 4 student and make $2240. I could really use the help here:))))
