Events this week: Senior Charlie Cards, Underground Mammals, high school musicals, and holiday sales (Updated)

Here are highlights of what’s happening around town this week. The weekend will be hopping, mostly with early Christmas activities. But there are plenty of non-holiday events going on during the week.

  • Culinary Demos for Seniors: Dinner with Dividends (12:30 – 1:30 pm) @ The Southborough Senior Center: This session, learn recipes for when you do want leftovers, especially when you plan the second act in advance. Please sign up early; we can only take 20 people for each demonstration.

  • Carolyn Dykema Visit: office hours & Senior Charlie Cards (10:30 am – 12:00 pm) @ The Southborough Senior Center, 9 Cordaville Rd: The Southborough Senior Center will host Representative Carolyn C. Dykema. Southborough residents are encouraged to stop in to share concerns, questions and opinions on state issues or simply to chat with Rep. Dykema. Additionally, Southborough seniors age 65+ will have the opportunity to receive a reduced-fare Charlie Card. MWRTA staff will be present to process applications and issue cards.   • Tales & Tails (6:15 – 7:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, Eaton Meeting Room: Children can spend some time reading to a dog. Children must have some reading ability. Registration is required.   • Hands On Nature – Underground Mammals (3:45 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library, Eaton Meeting Room: Hands On Nature is back with a special program about underground mammals! This program is for children ages 5-9 years old. Please register in the Children’s Room.
  • ARHS Musical – Legally Blonde (7:00 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School, auditorium, 79 Bartlett St, Northborough: Tickets $10/student, $15/adult, available for purchase online.
  • Improving Our Downtown Workshop (7:00 pm) @ Southborough Town House, Hearing Room, 17 Common St: The public is invited to participate in a workshop as part of the Economic Development Committee’s Downtown Business Village initiative. For details, see dedicated post.

  • Girl Scout Holiday Sing-a-long (6:30 – 7:30 pm) @ Community House Lawn: Event for all families in Southborough with Girl Scouts. Bring your singing voices and an unwrapped toy or gift to donate for a child ages infant to teen (encouraged but not required for attendance). Sponsored by the Southborough Fire Department (collecting toys for Project Just Because)
  • Holiday Art and Gift Sale Preview (7:00 – 9:00 pm) @ 10 Chestnut Hill Road & L’Abri Fellowship at 49 Lynbrook Road: Preview event for the sale formerly known as the Chestnut Hill Farm Holiday Art and Gift Sale. Admission is free, but free tickets are required for the preview party at 49 Lynbrook as space is limited. (Stay tuned for details in a dedicated post.)
  • Elf the Musical (AVRTHS production) (7:00 pm) @ Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School, 215 Fitchburg St, Marlborough: $3 per student/child/senior and $5 per adult

  • Annual Kids Shop (9:00 am – 2:00 pm) @ Woodward School, cafeteria: An annual Southborough tradition. Boy Scout Troop 92 provides a safe haven for kids to do their own holiday shopping for family members without parents’ prying eyes. Scouts will wrap the purchased presents for free. (Stay tuned for details in a dedicated post.)
  • FIRST Lego League competition (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) @ Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School: AVRTHS’ Aztechs robotics team is hosting a FIRSTLego League event. This year thirty fourlocal Lego teams will compete in an all-day event. Come see what these amazing students havecreated for this competition.
  • Holiday Art and Gift Sale (10:00 am – 5:00 pm) @ 10 Chestnut Hill Road & L’Abri Fellowship at 49 Lynbrook Road: Formerly known as the Chestnut Hill Farm Holiday Art and Gift Sale, now expanded to two locations. Over 25 local artisans and craftspeople, both returning and new, will be selling holiday gifts. This event is free and open to the public. (Stay tuned for details in a dedicated post.)
  • Chrismas Bazaar (10:00 am – 2:00 pm) @ St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 27 Main St: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church’s annual Christmas Bazaar. Annual fundraiser features Crafts, Bake Shop, Silent Auction, the White Elephant room, Jewelry room, Toy room, Basket Raffle, lunch Cafe, and more. Admission is always free.   • Children’s Christmas Tree Decorating Party (10:30 am – 1:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: Children can make ornaments, decorate the Library Christmas tree, and enjoy refreshments at the annual party.
  • Friends of Southborough Library’s Book Sale (11:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: Gifts for book lovers of all ages: Gently used books at bargain basement prices – featuring a wide selection of hardcover and paperback fiction and non-fiction books for adults, teens and children; One Free book per Child
  • Santa Day (12:00 – 3:00 pm) @ Community House: Weather permitting, Santa flies into Southborough on helicopter. At noon, he lands on the field at the corner of Rte 85 and Rte 30.
    Afterwards, he crosses over to the Southborough Community House for Southborough Kindergroup’s annual event. (Stay tuned for details in a dedicated post.)

Updated (11/30/17 9:55 am): Assabet had the wrong times posted in their Facebook events for Elf. I should have noticed that the times on the poster are different – and correct as confirmed by a by a reader in the know! To confirm, those times are Friday, December 1st and Saturday December 2nd at 7:00 pm and Sunday, December 3rd at 11:00 am.
