Post-season sports: Athletes head to New England championships; Winter playoffs begin

Kudos are in order for three Algonquin athletes heading to New England Championships this weekend.

Plus, brackets have been posted for Ice Hockey and Basketball. All four of Algonquin’s teams will gear up for those tourneys.

ARHS Indoor Track competed at All States this weekend. Alex Lemieux won first place in the Boys High Jump. He set a new school record on the way. (You can read about that in the telegram.) For the Girls, Tess Reyes placed 5th in the 1 Mile Run.

Their ranks qualify them to return to the Reggie Lewis Track Center for the New England Championships. That’s this Saturday, March 3rd at 10:30 am.

Andrew Goddard (shown here accepting his 3rd place win at states Division II championship) ranked 5th at All States (photo tweeted by @ARHSW)Gonk Wrestling’s Andrew Goddard wrestled his way to 5th place at the All-State Championship. That qualifies him to move on to the New England Championships this Friday and Saturday, March 2nd and 3rd. That starts Friday at 5:00 pm at the Providence Career and Technical Academy.

T-Hawks Gymnasts got coverage for their strong season and their competition at the South Sectionals on Saturday. (You can read that here.) Unfortunately, it’s the end of their journey this season. At 6th place, the team didn’t qualify for states.

Winter playoff madness starts tonight with ARHS Girls Basketball in the Central Division I sectionals. The 10th seed team will head to 7th seed Leominster’s court for the First Round. That’s 7:00 pm, February 26th. The winner heads to Quarter Finals on Wednesday night.

Tomorrow night, February 27th, 7th seed Boys Basketball will host 10th seed Acton-Boxborough for their First Round playoff at 7:00 pm. The winner heads to Quarter Finals on Friday night.

On Wednesday, February 28th, Algonquin’s 13th seed Girls Ice Hockey plays in the Preliminary Round for State Division II playoffs. (Girls Ice Hockey doesn’t have sectionals.) They’ll face off against 20th seed Medfield at 7:00 pm at New England Sports Center in Marlborough.

On Saturday, Gonk Boys Hockey outplayed top-ranked Shrewsbury to tie the Roy Conference League. That earned them 2nd seed in Central sectionals. They have a BYE on the Quarter Finals playing out this week. They’re slated to play in the semis March 6th, 5:00 pm at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg.
