Are you afraid your child won’t have success in the world? Could your fears be standing in their way?
According to author Julie Lythcott-Haims, overinvolvement of parents can cause more harm than good.
Fay School is again inviting all Southborough parents to their Ideas&Insights series. The events are free to attend and open to the public, but an RSVP is required to reserve your spot.
This month, they are bringing in the author of the NYT bestseller “How to Raise an Adult”. to discuss “an alternate philosophy for raising preteens and teens to self-sufficient young adulthood.” Her website pitches that hers books/talks are:
Relevant to parents of toddlers as well as of twentysomethings – and of special value to parents of teens-this book is a rallying cry for those who wish to ensure that the next generation can take charge of their own lives with competence and confidence.
The book’s subtitle sums up Lythcott-Haims’ message: “Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success”. Fay’s event promo explains:
Based on her New York Times bestselling book by the same name, in this talk Julie draws on her own insights as a mother and as a student dean to highlight the ways in which overparenting harms children, their stressed-out parents, and society at large. While empathizing with the parental hopes and, especially, fears that lead to overhelping, Lythcott-Haims inspires audiences to examine their behaviors and join the growing movement to allow children to develop the resourcefulness, resilience, and inner determination necessary for success. . .
The book emerged from her decade as Stanford University’s Dean of Freshmen, where she was known for her fierce advocacy for young adults and received the university’s Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for creating “the” atmosphere that defines the undergraduate experience, and was also known for her fierce critique of the growing trend of parental involvement in the day-to-day lives of college students. Toward the end of her tenure as dean she began speaking and writing widely on the harm of helicopter parenting.
The event will be held Monday, March 26 at 7:00 pm. The presentation will be in the Root Meeting Room, located on first floor of Root Academic Building. Parking is available in Fay School’s Harlow Circle. Please use the East Entrance at 23 Middle Road.
