Finn benefits from Eagle Scout project

Over the past month, another Eagle Scout candidate put efforts towards improving our community. Troop 1’s Alex Gowdy worked on a project for his alma mater.

Finn Principal Clayton Ryan shared the news:

The staff and students at the Mary Finn School in Southborough would like to thank Alex Gowdy, his Boy Scout Troop, and crew of community volunteers for all their hard work in cleaning up the Finn School’s outdoor courtyard. . .

Alex approached me in the spring with an interest in doing a community service project for Finn. He said, as a former student Finn he always had special memories of Finn and wanted to give back. I was thrilled with the idea and we discussed many different ideas. The final idea was a complete clean-up of the courtyard.

Alex coordinated all aspects of the clean-up, from recruiting and scheduling workers to arrive bright and early on a Saturday, to reaching out to area businesses for donations of mulch and flowers.

Ryan was thrilled with the outcome, summing up:

Alex’s work was amazing. We’ve never seen our courtyard look so nice.

The proof is in the photos he contributed. Click thumbnails to enlarge the before, during, and after project pics:

Excellent work by Alex, it looks amazing. But… why is this something that requires a boy scout volunteer? The grounds of all our schools need some major TLC. We seem to be happy to spend big bucks on the upfront costs of things, but fail to properly budget for long term maintenance.
