With the Central MA title under its belt, Algonquin Golf vied for the State honors on Monday. The team fell short at 7th place in the Division 1 Championships.
One of the team’s top players didn’t make it to the greens and another didn’t fare as well as he hoped. The Telegram reports:
Any chance that Algonquin had of contending for the state title was probably lost when senior Matt Umphrey became sick and had to stay home. Umphrey had tied for second behind [Jack] Tobin in the Central Mass. tournament last week and won it last year.
“We thought if we both had played our ‘A’ game,” Tobin said, “we could have won, and once he wasn’t here, we knew we couldn’t win, and I wasn’t as focused as I would have liked to be.”
Nevertheless, Tobin still managed to card a 4-over 75, tops among Central Mass. golfers. Last week, he shot the same score, and it was good enough to earn him Central Mass. Division 1 medalist honors, but on Monday, it tied him for 10th. (read more)
