Last year, the Recreation Commission Chair successfully lobbied to move Town Meeting open on the weekend.
Kristen Lavault reasoned that the reason so many parents of young children don’t attend Town Meeting is because they can’t make it on a weeknight. Some parents can’t or won’t leave their kids alone, book a babysitter, or keep them out late at night. To avoid April sports conflicts, she suggested a Saturday afternoon in March. Her Citizen’s Petition passed.
Town Meeting 2019 is scheduled for a week from tomorrow.
Now, as promised, Recreation is again offering to watch children for free while parents vote. (They have made the same offer in past years. But hopefully a Saturday afternoon and night babysitting event will attract more families than weeknights did.)
Today, Rec posted a pre-registration signup sheet. It shows that babysitting is being sponsored by Friends of Southborough Recreation.
Kids will have the option to play gym games, watch a movie, work on homework, or dabble in some crafts.
Sign up is strongly recommended

Town Meeting opens on Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 pm in the Trottier Middle School auditorium. Babysitting will be in the school’s gym with drop off beginning at 12:30 pm.
Assuming that business isn’t completed before 5:00 pm (a safe bet), the meeting will recess for two hours. The second session is from 7:00 pm until up to 11:00 pm.
Officials and voters will hope to have addressed everything in the Warrant by then. But, if there is still more to vote on, the meeting will continue until Monday night at 7:00 pm.
