Open discussion thread: Ask questions, share opinions

Above: I love it when readers share great shots from around town. The credit for these goes to Alan Bezanson for “capturing” these waterfowl on Sunday.

It’s time for another open thread.

But first. . . the above images were cropped to fit. To enjoy the full perspective (and read the great captions provided), click on the pics below. (If you have pictures you want to share with readers, email mysouthborough@gmail.com.)

"Tip of the iceberg on the Sudbury Reservoir" (by Allan Bezanson) "Flight time. While a pair of mallards occupied this small mud pond two males dropped in briefly. This one, then the other, soon decided to go looking elsewhere." (by Allan Bezanson)

Now, what’s on your mind this week, Southborough?

For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
  • Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
  • Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
  • Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
  • Point out interesting or helpful resources

You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

Beth was waiting for a new open discussion, so I guess I’ll use this old one.
It’ about some issues at FitzGerald’s general store.
I think it’s time for a little community policing there by our police There is only one handicap parking sign there that is faded so bad you can hardly see it, there should be 2 signs for 2 handicap parking spaces. who do I talk to about getting these signs up to date, there is always cars parked in the handicap spot that shouldn’t be there. (NO HANDYCAP Card on display ) any info would be greatly appreciated from anyone

Have you talked to the store before you invoke the power of government?

What is this reluctance to having our government do its job, They get paid to enforce this type of thing. Why would we want to send in a civilian with no authority to try and enforce it. I see nothing but a conflict coming from doing that. Arborist, I would direct your concerns at the town hall, they will probably direct you to the planning board for enforcement.

Really? You mean beside being a statist invoking the power of the government to harass someone over something that might be resolved with a simple chat? Are you so afraid of your neighbor(s) you wouldn’t say something directly, but instead look to expend our tax dollars opening an official investigation as your primary approach to everything in life?

Do you go to the court as your first option if you are served a bad meal?

Let me close by asking you this: Which approach would you want if you ran the store?

Holy smokes.

Agreed maybe talk to the owner. How did the arborist calculate the two spots?

Thanks for your comments above, to answer some of the comments , No I didn’t talk to store owner, I agree with Publius, nothing but conflict to be had, as far as the 2 handicap spaces that’s the way it’s always been, the sign got run over years ago and was never replaced. I will look into town hall, there must be a town board or official that can indorse this issue

Alan has a point. As a nearby neighbor and occasional customer of Fitzy’s, I can’t imagine trying to make the case to the very nice owners about the many reasons why it would be appreciated if they would upkeep their property. For many commuters, this is the only slice of Southborough they see—a giant potholed swath of land which floods into a lake in the spring and fall rendering traffic jams on Southville while commuter pick-ups/drop-offs try to navigate the hoses, cones, potholes, and inches of water.
The building and adjacent lot are visually not kept up…no effort whatsoever to show some pride in their business—at least with respect to the exterior and interior physical property.
It *would* be a boon to Southborough to see this area better maintained, paved, painted, etc. I honestly think this is an area where town leadership should initiate a dialogue and do what they can to influence improvements.

Does this mean that arborist and Publius are the same person?

If the store does not maintain their property – then don’t do business with them. Simple! Vote with both your pocketbook and your feet. Eventually, with an ever declining customer base, they’ll go out of business and perhaps the property will be converted into a commuter rail parking lot.

Yaay!!!

Good luck trying to get handicapped parking enforced. I saw someone parked in a lane of travel yesterday, so they could converse with another person in another car, who was parked in a pull off. Too bad the second person couldn’t have also pulled off the road. Nah – just block traffic. What did Forrest Gump say? “Stupid is as stupid does.”.

I didn’t mean to start a war among readers, I just simply want to make sure the people that park in the handicap space / spaces are in fact handicap certified The intent is so people that are handicap can park there safely.

Quick question: what is all that water pumping on Cordaville Rd near Mt. Vickery? There is now a rather nasty pothole growing near that traffic cone, and I’ve seen people forced into the hole when the road is busy. Seems like two hoses are very busy.

Was going to ask the same thing:

Been a solid month with Two hoses dumping constant runoff onto 85 South. Can we get any update on what is going on here or do we just name this body of water Lake Vickery?
