On Sunday, Algonquin honored the graduating Class of 2019.
Class President Matthew White shared with classmates that one of the best feelings in life is when someone (a coach, friend, etc.) takes the time and energy to find your good side. He followed with a challenge for the to do the same for others:
Approach, accept, and connect with people. Search for the good side. And if you can’t find it, dig deeper, because it’s there. . .
And I promise that you’ll meet, love and find some extraordinary people along the way.
Senior Class Essayist Giancarlo Coelho told classmates he was fascinated with the word “commencement”, signifying that they’re about to begin their new lives. He noted that in addition to looking forward, they should look back at all of the people who helped them get where they are – parents, teachers, guidance counselors – and thank them.
The commencement speakers were English teachers Virginia Fitzgerald and Thomas Alera. The ceremony included Christine Johnson’s last address as Superintendent. Students also heard from Principal Sara Pragluski Walsh who emceed the ceremony. Prior to her speech, she asked the graduates headed into military service, along with veterans and active service members, to rise for a thank you.
According to the Community Advocate, in addition to all the pictured friends and family in the gym, an overflow crowd viewed the live streamed ceremony from the cafeteria.
