Algonquin pulls off surprise, captures CMass Division 1 boys’ cross-country title
Algonquin Regional coach Nate Uttaro only had one word to describe how he felt after the Tomahawks’ unexpected victory in Saturday’s Central Mass. Division 1 meet at Gardner Municipal Golf Course.
“Amazing.”
“We’re definitely new to the scene,” Uttaro said. “It’s been a while since anyone else other than St. John’s has won. I’ve never seen a team this focused for the entire season.”
Algonquin secured its first CMass title under Uttaro with 53 points, placing five runners from its vaunted lead pack in the top 13. (read more)
The Girls didn’t do too shabbily themselves, placing 2nd out of the 15 teams. You can take a look at a congrats photo tweeted by ARHS Athletics right. (For more detailed results on runners from both teams, click here.)
ARHS Field Hockey didn’t have as great a day. The only team to best the 2nd seed team this season repeated the act at the regional Finals. The Gonk girls lost to top-seed Nashoba 2-0. You can read more about the defeat here.
Algonquin Girls Soccer will hope not to suffer a similar fate at their Central MA Finals.
The top-seed Gonk Girls beat out North Middlesex in the Semi-Finals, 4-1 yesterday. The Sentinal & Enterprise covered the action on the field here.
The Girls will now have to face the only team to beat them this season in the Finals. The Wachusett Mountaineers ended the T-Hawks undefeated status with a 1-0 win Halloween week. (You can see the Telegram’s dramatic pictures of the game here.) That game was on Wachusett’s home field. This time around, they’ll be playing on neutral turf.
The big game is scheduled for 4:30 pm this Thursday, November 14th at Doyle Field in Leominster.
On Sunday, Cheerleaders competed in the Mid-Wach Leagues tournament. The Game Day team scored 1st place and is heading to States. The varsity Performance team placed 6th and will be competing in the Central/West MA Regionals. Both of those competitions are this Sunday, November 17th at Shrewsbury High.
In the non-playoff tournament, Algonquin beat North Middlesex 30-20. This Friday, they’ll host Leominster at 7:00 pm under the lights.
