The Town issued an alert that the Southborough Youth Commission is looking for a volunteer to fill a vacancy.
Despite the name of the commission, it’s work isn’t confined to helping youth. (Which is why the Town’s advertisement refers to the “Youth and Family board”.)
SYC is the board that advises and oversees operations of Southborough Youth and Family Services. And even that name doesn’t encompass all that the board and department are responsible for. As the announcement notes:
SYFS provides behavioral health services, referral support to public assistance programs and need-based services as well as mental health and wellness initiatives.
You can learn more about SYFS’ full range of services here.
As for who the SYC is hoping will volunteer, the announcement states:
Candidates with one or more of the following will be strongly considered:
- experience in the mental health/ behavioral health field
- experience in social services and public assistance
- experience in prevention and early intervention in mental health and/or substance use
The Youth Commission board would also welcome candidates who identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ or BIPOC community or as a member of an underserved community within Southborough. Applicants of all abilities will be considered. The Youth Commission meets once per month. Board members are expected to attend monthly meetings and to respond on a timely basis to emails and texts from the town department. Additionally, board members assist the SYFS Director with tasks related to the department’s operations and programs. Interested candidates should contact the Youth Commission’s chair, Lauren Richey, at lrichey@southboroughma.com and complete the Town of Southborough’s Volunteer Form found [here.]
