The Southborough Town Scholarship Advisory Committee selected five recent high school graduates to receive awards. The awards were presented athe August 17th meeting of the Board of Selectmen.
All scholarships are funded through donations.
The graduates were all members of Algonquin Regional’s Class of 2021. Below are more details on each, along with pictures of the award winners posing with parents, Scholarship Advisory Committee member Alexandra Mills, and selectmen. (Click on Thumbnails to enlarge.)
In selecting applicants, the Southborough Town Scholarship Advisory Committee takes into consideration academics, extracurricular activities, work and volunteer experiences, financial need, as well as written expression.
The Carroll Harris Memorial Scholarship is based on the above criteria, plus the applicant must have participated in gymnastics, plan to major in physical education, education, or recreation, or have demonstrated active participation in a town recreation program.
This year, two Carol Harris Scholarships* were awarded. They went to:
Emmy Habib
Extra curriculars and work experience includes: Algonquin Tiny Tomahawks Pre-School Teacher’s, Teacher’s Assistant – NexGeneration Children’s Center – Work
Will be attending: Westfield State University – Early Childhood Education
Grace Hartnett
Extra curriculars and work experience includes: Special Olympics, National Honor Society, DECA, Global Goals
Will be attending: University of Maryland – Nursing
This year, three Town Scholarships* were awarded to:
Olivia Battles
Extra curriculars and work experience includes: Best Buddies, Harbinger, Freshman Orientation Leader, Administrative Assistant to Southborough Town Clerk – Work
Will be attending: College of the Holy Cross
Erin Desmond
Extra curriculars and work experience includes: Best Buddies, V Field Hockey, V Rugby, Beaumont Nursing Home – Work
Will be attending: Mount Holyoke College
Bennett Yee
Extra curriculars and work experience includes: Special Olympics, Volleyball, Green Earth Club, Algonquin Full Orchestra
Will be attending: Washington University in St. Louis
*The Carol Harris Memorial Scholarships are for $1,000 each. The Town Scholarship amounts are determined each year based on the amount of available funds.
