[Highlights from last week’s competitions and what’s on tap this week in high school sports.]
Algonquin Golf was slated to play in the Central MA D1 tournament this morning. So far, I can’t find any word on how the Boys fared.
As we enter post-season tournaments, only three other varsity teams are currently scheduled to play this week.
The first is ARHS Field Hockey vs Franklin at New England Baseball Complex at 4:00 pm this afternoon. The ARHS team scored a win last week but added another loss to the losing season tally (2-9-2).
Girls Volleyball heads to Shepherd Hill this evening for a 6:45 pm match. The Girls beat Wachusett last Tuesday, improving their record to 8-3 for the season.
This Friday at 7:00 pm, Marlborough Football will play at Algonquin. At last Friday’s Homecoming Game, ARHS Football shutout Leominster 0-28. That brings their record to 5-1. According to the Telegram, the team hasn’t had this strong of an opening season since 1994. The story noted that Algonquin has two more chances to win a spot in the playoffs. (Read more here.)
This morning, the Telegram posted that ARHS Girl’s Soccer Coach is optimistic about their post-season chances:
The Algonquin Regional girls’ soccer team has climbed up to No. 2 in the latest Telegram & Gazette Central Mass. girls’ soccer coaches’ poll, and after winning the 2019 Central Mass. Division 1 title and their pod championship last fall, coach John Clifford again has his squad rounding into form at the right time of the season.
“I like how we’re progressing through the season,” Clifford said of Algonquin, which has reeled off a seven-game unbeaten streak after briefly falling below .500 six games in. “You want to win every game, but we know that we want to be peaking at the right time.” (read more)
