Donate your extra candy to the troops (Updated)

Don’t risk a sugar coma. Donate your extra lollipops and taffy twists.

Is your household suffering from candy overload? You can donate your excess candy to Neary School. Don’t worry – they aren’t planning to give the 4-5th graders a massive sugar rush.

For the 20th year, Neary is holding a collection drive for the troops (plus a new special group this year).* So if you know a Neary student, you can ask them to bring yours in. The drive begins tomorrow and runs through this Friday, November 5th.*

The school is also accepting donations to help fund shipping the care packages. (It generally costs them about $700 to ship over 35 boxes.)

As always, organizers encourage community members to reach out if there is someone serving overseas they would like to receive a care package:

If you know of someone from Southboro or an ARHS graduate or a relative or a friend of a friend who is stationed overseas, please email Mrs. Turieo at jturieo@nsboro.k12.ma.us and we will send them a package full of treats.

*Updated (11/2/21 10:39 am): For readers who don’t follow the comments, here is an update with some changes from the drive organizer, Neary teacher Jen Turio. It includes how the community can drop off donations:

We are still collecting candy this year. However, given that I have very few addresses for soldiers stationed overseas, we are pivoting a bit. I found an organization in Worcester that sends college care packages to college students who grew up in foster care. I have reached out to them and they are happy to accept any candy we can donate. Here is a link in case anyone is interested in what they do.

They need the candy by this Saturday, so if you could please send candy in by Friday, that would be great. If you do not have a child at Neary, you can simply leave the candy in the large box at our front door.

We will still send to soldiers as well. Please note that the reason we try to only send to US soldiers stationed overseas is because you can use the flat rate boxes for APO/APE addresses. When we have sent to soldiers stationed here, we are paying more in shipping than the candy is worth.

Are they still doing this with the ongoing COVID stuff at Neary and especially in Jen Turieo’s room? She usually organizes it so it makes me wonder.
