I’m overdue in sharing an update on Algonquin varsity sports.
Last week, I shared that Volleyball, and Boys and Girls Soccer were in the state championship playoffs. Since then, two of the teams have fallen out and two more teams are entering the MIAA state tourneys.
Girls Volleyball lost its “Round of 16” game 1-3 to upper seed Barnstable on Tuesday.

Last weekend, Boys Soccer played in the “Round of 32”, against Acton-Boxborough. Thanks to twitter, here’s a peek at the winning play in 2nd overtime that cinched their 2-1 victory :

The 12th seed team wasn’t as successful when they went up against 5th seed Leominster on Tuesday. The Round of 16 ended in a 0-2 loss.
8th seed ARHS Girls Soccer is still in the D1 playoffs. Over the past week, they bested two much lower seed competitors. Gonk beat Lincoln-Sudbury 1-0 on Saturday and Andover 1-0 on Tuesday. Here’s the winning shot from the last one:

Now they become the underdogs as they head into the Round of 8 (which is essentially the quarter finals). They’ll travel to Hingham on Saturday at 3:00 pm to play the school’s undefeated, top seed Harbormen. To attend, you’ll have to buy tickets online here.
This Saturday is also when Boys and Girls Cross Country teams head to Wrentham for the State Division 1B race. Last weekend, both teams finished in 2nd place at the CMass District meet.
At Midwach leagues last weekend, Cheer qualified for Regionals coming up this Sunday at Shepherd Hill:

ARHS Football is continuing in its non-playoff matchups. They host Fitchburg at 1:00 pm on Saturday. Last Friday, they beat Nashoba 28-7.
