Town announces Linda Hubley Memorial Scholarship

Southborough’s Scholarship Committee is is launching a new scholarship this year: the Linda Hubley Memorial Scholarship:

The Linda Hubley Memorial Scholarship will be given to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to their community through volunteerism, environmental protection and/or ongoing education in these areas.

Linda passed away in 2021. She dedicated her life to her community, and in particular, to conservation. She served on multiple committees including Recreation, CERT, Conservation Commission and co-founded The Sudbury River Watershed Organization.

The new award is in addition to the Town Scholarships, and Carol Harris Memorial Scholarship. All three are funded by donations to the public:

Donations to the Linda Hubley Memorial Scholarship, and Southborough Town Scholarships can be made to: Town of Southborough – Scholarship Committee. Southborough Town House, 17 Common Street, Southborough, MA 01772

As for applying for this and the other awards, the Committee plans to post the application later this month. (Stay tuned for details.)

For years, the Town had offered three scholarships. One had to be eliminated last year*. Fortunately, the Committee was contacted by a member of the community who wanted to contribute $500 in seed money towards starting a scholarship in Linda Hubley’s name.

On Tuesday, Committee Chair Isabelle Murphy told selectmen, that rather than having strict criteria, the donor’s intent was that it be given “in the spirit that Linda lived in”.

The establishment was contingent on support from her family, which has given it.

You can read more about Linda Hubley in her obituary here. You can also read about her recognition in 2012 as an Unsung Heroine here. And you can read about her work covering Southborough news for the community (before and overlapping this blog) here.

*The Capital Group Academic Scholarship was eliminated after an agreement with the company that had agreed to continue funding it fell through.
