Volunteer for trail clearing and cleanup on Friday (the real Earth Day)

For those who would like to do some good work on Earth Day, there’s a volunteer opportunity to help clear Southborough trails this Friday.

Verity Opportunities has partnered with the Southborough Trails Committee to organize an effort this Friday, April 22nd. The event will take place from 1:00 – 3:30 pm. The public is invited to join them.

[Note: This is separate from Southborough’s annual Earth Day Cleanup which always takes place on a Saturday. That means, as with most years, it’s not on the actual holiday.* For details on the Saturday effort to clean up town roadsides and public spaces, click here.]

Participants in the Friday effort will meet at the Fayville Playground on Central Street. There, volunteers will receive “assignments” from organizers. Volunteers will split up and head out to various trails in town. Volunteers will be working on trails to do brush clearing, some limbs removal, and trailhead trash clean up.

Clean up sites will include the Sudbury Reservoir/Boroughs Loop/Aqueduct trail. Volunteers will also help out in the Town Forest.**

To sign up to help, click here.

Volunteers should be prepared with work gloves, long pants/shirts, bug spray, and water. They are also asked if they can to bring loppers, hand pruners, and/or rakes.

The Trails Committee thanks Verity for volunteering to organize the signup for this effort. Verity, run by a group of local teens (many from Southborough), has helped the committee do clearing work in the past. (They also organized volunteers to help last Earth Day in Northborough.)

The Committee also thanks the Chinese Gospel Church for its volunteer effort scheduled to take place that morning.

Worth noting, if you’re interested in this event, you may also be interested in Southborough’s Planet Palooza activities, including an event that morning. Click here for those details.

*The next time Earth Day will fall on a Saturday is next spring. (The last time was in 2017.)

**The Trails Committee offered to share their volunteers with the Stewardship Committee which oversees the Town Forest trails.

Updated (4/21/22 8:52 am): I fixed the sign up link.
