This week, most of Algonquin’s winter varsity teams enter official season competitions.
The Gonk Swim teams dive in first on Thursday with a meet against Gardner. Then, in order, Basketball teams hit the courts with Shephard Hill, Wrestling hits the mats with St. John’s, and Boys Hockey hits the ice with Groton-Dunstable.
On Sunday, ARHS Indoor Track will compete in Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association’s annual winter invitational.
This week, Girls Ice Hockey is only scheduled to scrimmage. Still, as last year’s state champs, it is the Titans team getting media attention.
In MetroWest Daily News’ list of 25 Girls Ice Hockey players to watch this season, four were members of the Algonquin-based co-op team that helped the Titans win last year’s Division 2 title. But prior coverage of the team’s defending champs status noted that one of them (Marlborough’s Mallory Farrell) isn’t with the Titans this year. (She’s now playing for North American Hockey Academy.)
That still leaves three Titans entering the season with strong records:
- Bryn Domolky —an Algonquin junior from Southborough who last year “dished out 17 assists and scored 16 goals” and scored the game-tying goal in the 2-1 OT state championship win.
- Emily Johns — a Clinton High junior responsible for 26 goals and 13 assists, described by former Coach Mike Hodge as “a sniper who uses her speed and skill to create havoc on the ice”.
- Lauren O’Malley — a sophomore (school not specified), a “key member of the defensive corps”.
