[The Boston Marathon always includes a pack of runners from our town. Between now and Patriots Day, I’m featuring stories of resident runners donning bibs for a cause]
For the seventh time, Southborough’s Nancy Gould will support the Dana Farber Institute’s fight against cancer by running in the Boston Marathon. She’s not doing it alone. One of her teammates is Southborough’s Susan Mahoney, making her third run. Another, Dan Frank is making his 5th run.
For both ladies, this year marks the ten year anniversary of their first Boston Marathon. For Frank, it marks his 22nd anniversary, and his “final marathon”.
Cancer took both Frank’s and Gould’s mothers’ lives and impacted lives of people Mahoney loves. All three are among a large DFMC team hoping donations they raise can help researchers find a cure.
Frank’s fundraising page shares:
In 2001, I ran the first of five Boston Marathons for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. . . Two weeks after the marathon my mother, Margaret, passed away from colon cancer. Running for Dana Farber made an enormous difference in my life. It was way to do something positive in her memory.
In 2023, I will run my 25th and final marathon. There was never a question that I would ask the Dana Farber Marathon Challenge to allow me one more opportunity to raise money for the amazing work that they do. . .
[DFMC runners] run for people who can’t make this appeal to you. We do this to save lives.
Many companies match all or a portion of gifts made by an employee. Check with your HR department or visit JimmyFund.org/matching-gifts to see if your workplace has this kind of program.

As I’ve highlighted in past years, Gould’s fundraising is in honor of her mother who died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 66. On her fundraising page, she promotes:
One hundred percent of every dollar raised by the DFMC team supports the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. These funds are fueling some of today’s most promising basic cancer research.
Thank you for your support! Together, we’re headed toward the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer.

Mahoney shares Gould’s goal. Her page promotes:
Cancer continues to impact the lives of the people I love. The Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team runs and raises funds with thousands of special people in mind. From Hopkinton to Boston, we carry thoughts of those people every step of the way.
