[The Boston Marathon always includes a pack of runners from our town. Between now and Patriots Day, I’m featuring stories of resident runners donning bibs for a cause]
As part of a family of “HUGE Celtics fans”, Southborough’s Nia Benoit is especially honored to be running in the Boston Marathon to support the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation.
Benoit’s fundraising page describes BCSF’s “incredible work”:
The mission of the Shamrock Foundation is to extend the Boston Celtics championship legacy into the New England community through initiatives that benefit children in need. On an annual basis, the Shamrock Foundation provides grassroots programming and strategic funding to local organizations serving at risk or at need youth populations.
The runner goes on to explain her motivation for running for the cause:
Sports and philanthropy have always been a huge part of my life. Basketball runs deep in our home. We have 6 basketball hoops, my husband is the president of the Southborough Youth Basketball Association, he coaches two of our son’s teams while I coach the other team. We see first hand how youth sports impact the lives of our kids and those in our community. Sports are an outlet for energy, they support physical and mental well-being, all while teaching life lessons of teamwork, perseverance and resilience.
April 17th will be Benoit’s second Boston Marathon run. (In 2017, she supported the Claddagh Fund.)
