Since my last sports update on Tuesday, the Central Mass tourneys played out without Algonquin picking up any more titles. But with the remaining MIAA state brackets finally posted, more Titans teams are slated to enter those tourneys this week.
This afternoon, Gonk Baseball will play in the MIAA Division 1 Preliminary Round. The 28th seed team will play at home against 37th seed Acton-Boxborough on Thursday, June 1st at 4:00 pm.
Yesterday, ARHS Boys Volleyball beat lower seed Medford 3-1 in the D1 Preliminary Round. The 31st seed will have to face 2nd seed Lowell in tomorrow’s Round of 32. That’s Friday, June 2nd at 5:00 pm.
On Tuesday, Titans Girls Tennis won the D1 Prelim Round 5-0 against lower seed Peabody. Tomorrow, they’ll face #3 Lincoln-Sudbury. That’s Friday, June 2nd at 4:00 pm.
Despite winning the CMass title earlier this week, Titans Boys Tennis is only seeded 21st for Division 1. Tomorrow, they’ll take on 12th seed Arlington in the Round of 32. That’s Friday, June 2nd at 4:00 pm.
Although both ARHS Boys and Girls Lacrosse were top ranked going into the CMass Championship Finals, they failed to snag the titles on Tuesday night.
As I previously posted, both teams were pitted against opponents who beat them earlier this season. Prior to the Boys game, sports reporter Tommy Cassell tweeted that Grafton also beat Gonk in the same game in 2021.
The Telegram covered the coach’s reaction to their 8-11 loss on Tuesday:
“They played almost mistake free. Their defense is stout,” said Algonquin coach Matt Nofsinger, whose team scored the game’s final five goals. “I knew we had to play our best, and we just didn’t. We just didn’t find a groove or find our sync. It was a tough day for us.”
(You can see the Telegram’s photo highlights here and Owen Jones photos here.) The Girls lost to Leominster 7-10. (You can see the Telegram’s photos with commentary here and Owen Jones photos here.)
The ARHS Lax teams were able to bypass the Preliminary Rounds for D1. On Monday, June 5th, they’ll enter the Round of 32. The 12th seed Gonk Boys will host 21st seed Bridgewater-Raynham at 4:00 pm. The 17th seed Girls will travel to take on #16 Hingham at 5:00 pm.
ARHS Boys Rugby will enter the 7 team Division 2 tourney as the top seed. They’re scheduled to host the Semi Finals next Thursday, with the competitor and time still TBA.
The co-op Girls Golf team out of Westborough earned 4th place in the North/Central/West sectional championship, with 333 points. Only one non-Gonk player (Westborough’s Sophie Kamil) will continue to states.
ARHS Outdoor Track teams are still in the midst of this week’s Meet of Champions competitions.
