Over the weekend Algonquin Regional High School and Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School held their graduation ceremonies. I’m sharing highlights from event coverage, plus what ARHS Seniors reportedly have planned for their futures.
Algonquin Graduation
Yesterday, 320 seniors graduated from Algonquin. (You can scan the names in the attached list.)
Students and family heard addresses from Superintendent Gregory Martineau, Student Council President Ben Schanzer of Southborough and Class President Sarah Coldwell. (Both Students are from Southborough. Students Jackson Gamache and Joseph Russell (of Northborough) partnered to present their “Class Essayist” speech. (The Community Advocate’s coverage includes some excerpts from the speeches.)
This year, the school gave out a diploma to a special “student” graduating this year — Parker the Library Lab. The therapy dog will be retiring with his owner, School Librarian Joann Amberson. You can see the popular pup walking the stage below:

For its Senior Issue, the paper asked students about their plans for next year. Of those who responded, about a dozen noted they would be working, taking a gap year, or entering a training program.
251 students self reported as college bound. As usual, our home state was by far the most common destination reported with 6 of the 11 most popular schools listed. Another ¼ of the grads will attend states that share a border. Here are data highlights from their Senior Issue:
- 122 plan to attend in state colleges/universities, including:
- UMass Amherst – 21
- Northeastern – 12
- Endicott College – 6
- Bridgewater State – 5
- Boston College – 4
- UMass Lowell – 4
- 25 will migrate to New York (including 5 for Cornell and 4 for RPI)
- 13 will head up to New Hampshire (7 of those for UNH)
- 12 are Connecticut bound (4 of those for Fairfield)
- 13 will dip down to Rhode Island, including (5 for Bryant and 4 for URI)

Assabet Graduation
The Vocational/Technical High School graduation took place at the DCU Center on Saturday. According to the Community Advocate there were well over 200 graduates from 16 shops. You can read ceremony highlights here.
