Last week was the scheduled season start for most fall varsity sports. The results were better for some Algonquin Titans teams than others.
Girls Volleyball had a great opening week with three decisive wins over Minnechaug (3-1), Hudson, (3-1), and Lincoln-Sudbury (3-0). You can view more photos (like the ones right) from the first home game by Owen Jones Photography here.
Field Hockey is also starting this season strong (especially compared to last year). They scored two wins, against Minnechaug (2-0) and Marlborough (7-0), and tied Lincoln-Sudbury (1-1).
Weather postponed the start of the season for the Titans team that made it all the way to state finals last fall – Girls Soccer. (Their first game is this afternoon.) But Boys Soccer was able to fit in two of their three scheduled games. Unfortunately, both were 3-1 losses (to St. John’s and Concord-Carlisle).
Weather also interfered with Algonquin’s Friday night Football opener. The game at Doherty had to be stopped after the first quarter due to lightning, with the home team up 6-0. The Titans weren’t able to change their luck when they reconvened on the Worcester South field on Saturday afternoon. Doherty beat them 34-0.
Superstitious fans may hope that triggers a reversal of the team’s fortunes, since last year Algonquin dominated Doherty in the opener, then lost each of their remaining regular season games.
Boys Golf followed up the prior week’s win with a second over Leominster, but then added two losses (to Wachusett and St John’s), bringing their early season record to 2-2.
Cross Country’s season openers are tomorrow.
